Prius PHV: Japan 2017 Best Seller. By a 1.000 miles...

Prius PHV surge pulls the market to record levels

2017 is the recovery year in Japan, mostly thanks to the introduction of the new Toyota Prius PHV, which in just three months, has disrupted the Japanese market, shooting for the leadership with 57%(!) share.

The Toyota Plug-in has shattered the Japanese all-time monthly record for a single model last month, with 5.370 units, pulling the total market to an all-time best of  6.566 units, with the EV Share now at 0,93%, more than double of the result achieved in 2016 (0,42%), which could mean that this market will finally break the 1% threshold soon.

To have an idea of the impact that the Prius PHV is having, last year winner, the Nissan Leaf, had 14.793 registrations during the whole of 2016, while this year the Toyota model is on its way to beat that score in June...

Also interesting is the fact that last month the Plug-in version of the Toyota Prius represented a third of ALL Prius sales. Now imagine if a third of all Prius sales in the world becomes PHV. That's a LOT on Plug-ins...

So, can Toyota add to its home trophy, the 2017 World Title? Well, that's a bit trickier because of the Tesla Model 3 arrival. But. Not impossible, IMHO.

  1. The Prius Prime will sell at least 70k this year. If the Model 3 could get half that it would be superimpresive.

It seems fairly safe to put the Prime as the worlds best seller for 2017 now already.

  2. What about sales in Japan in April?

  3. It is really nice to see the Prime perform so well in its home market. It has been a while since you published data on South Korea, to see how the Ioniq is doing in its own home market!

  4. Is there a reason you do no cover the Nissan Note e-Power? As far as I understand it basically is like a Leaf with a range extender. I'd put it under the plug-in hybrids like the old Ampera or the BMW i3 with range extender.

    1. The difference of the Note to the BMW i3 and Ampera is that the Nissan does not have a Plug.
